Simplistic equation:

Dp x %P + Ds + deltaNU - deltaSys + $Unew > 0

Dp = Value of passion donations to system
%P = Proportion of users who make passion donations
Ds = Value of selfish or side-effect use donations per user
deltaNU = Change in value of database from effect of a new user
deltaSys = Cost to keep system at normal performance
$Unew = Revenue of new user
